VW Golf 1.4 TSI water pump failure — plastic impeller
Overheating warning light. Temperature gauge rising rapidly. Steam from the engine bay. The 1.4 TSI engine in the Golf Mk6 and Mk7 uses a plastic impeller water pump that can disintegrate without warning. The impeller detaches from the shaft and the pump turns without moving coolant. Immediate engine shutdown is required to prevent overheating damage. Always replace the plastic impeller pump with a metal impeller unit — the upgrade costs marginally more but lasts significantly longer.
