The Subaru EJ255 2.5T turbocharged engine in the Forester XT consumes oil through the valve stem seals, particularly after 100,000 km. Blue smoke on startup and on trailing throttle is the characteristic symptom. Subaru issued a technical service bulletin for this issue. Replacement of all valve stem seals resolves the fault. This repair can be performed with the cylinder heads on the car using a valve spring compressor tool and compressed air to hold the valves.
